A code on the display? Here’s what it means.

Type the brand and the code the way the display shows it. Codes are explained brand by brand, because the same code can mean different things on different machines.

Safety first

Before you take a look inside

Most fixes on this site are checks anyone can do: a filter, a hose, a setting. Anything past that — a panel off, wiring, gas — is a job for a qualified engineer.

  • Switch off and unplug Turn the appliance off at the wall and take the plug out before you clean it, move it or look inside.
  • Use the right fuse Fit the fuse rating the manufacturer specifies — usually 13 A for washing machines, kettles and other high-power appliances.
  • Big appliances, wall sockets Plug washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers straight into a wall socket, not an extension lead.
  • Gas is for engineers Gas hobs and cookers must be fitted and repaired by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Register for recalls Register your appliance with its manufacturer, so you hear about a safety recall.

How these answers are written

  1. I

    The answer comes first

Each page opens with the likely cause and what to check, then explains why.

  2. II

    Written for UK homes

UK models and UK words: hob, tumble dryer, Gas Mark, °C, 230 V mains and 13 A plugs.

  3. III

    Brand by brand

Error codes and settings are explained for the brand and the machine, because the same code can mean different things.

  4. IV

    Safety before DIY

Where a fix means a panel off, wiring or gas, the page says so and points you to an engineer.

  5. V

    Plain English

No jargon without an explanation: when a part has a name, the page says what it does.

  6. VI

Not a shop or a repairer

We don’t make, sell or repair appliances.
